Dobson Organ, Opus 75

St. John Church was established in 1798 by Stith Mead, a young circuit rider converted at a camp meeting in Virginia. His family worshiped at St. Paul’s Church. He was allowed to preach there just once, for his sermon condemned Augusta’s 4,000 inhabitants for not knowing “their right hand from their left” in religious matters. Banned from St. Paul’s pulpit, he founded Augusta’s Methodist Society. It met in the home of Ebenezer Doughty at Washington (Sixth) Street near Reynolds. In 1800 Mead paid $500 for the Greene Street lot on which the church still stands.

Schantz organ, Opus 2238

St. John's United Methodist Church was founded in 1856. In the beginning, St. John's parishioners gathered in a small white chapel in the middle of the block on Richland Avenue between Chesterfield and Newberry Street. Before long, a need arose for a larger space to worship, and the congregation raised $245 to purchase the remainder of the block. The classic Greek revival building that served as St. John's first sanctuary was completed in 1859. Some of the furniture purchased for that sanctuary is still in use today at St. John's, reminding us of our rich history and humble beginnings.

The duo has been featured at numerous conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Association of Anglican Musicians, the East Texas Pipe Organ Festival, the Atlanta Summer Organ Festival, and at venues such as the Washington National Cathedral, St. Paul’s Cathedral (London), York Minster Cathedral (England), Kauffman Center (Kansas City), and the Mormon Tabernacle, among hundreds of others. Dr. Jens Korndörfer is the incoming Associate Professor of Organ at Baylor University, where he will begin in August 2023. Praised as “a virtuoso in the grand Romantic tradition” who creates “performances that are deeply musically satisfying as well as exciting” (The American Organist), Korndörfer has performed to critical acclaim at prestigious venues such as Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, the Montreal Bach Festival, the Cathedrals in Washington, Berlin, Paris, Salzburg, Oslo, and Moscow, Westminster Abbey in London, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and the Cultural Centre in Hong Kong. Korndörfer’s repertoire reaches from the Renaissance to the 21st century, including transcriptions, commissions, and world premieres. Passionate about forming the next generation of organists, Korndörfer taught at Agnes Scott College (2014–19) and, since 2017, has been directing the successful rebuild of the organ program at Georgia State University. In combination with graduate assistantships at major churches in the Atlanta area, the comprehensive program is designed to prepare students for a successful career in church and concert. As Director of Worship and the Arts, and Organist at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, GA, Korndörfer oversees a thriving music and arts ministry. Under his leadership, the sanctuary organ (IV/112) was completely rebuilt, enlarged, and re-voiced by organ builders Klais (Bonn, Germany) and Schlueter (Lithonia, GA). Thanks to collaborations with major cultural players, presentations and lecture series, and the introduction of programs that raise awareness for minorities in the classical arts, Jens significantly increased the reach of the church’s music and arts ministry. A top-honor graduate from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, the Oberlin Conservatory, the Musikhochschule in Bayreuth, and McGill University in Montreal, Korndörfer’s teachers include Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard, James David Christie, and Ludger Lohmann.
